DUALITY Series

Sydney-based artist Alun Rhys Jones depicts the melancholy, alienation and detachment that lie behind the glossy veneer of consumerism. The images are clean and precise, while the painting style is physical, loose and expressive.

Through the use of high key, luminous colour he exploits the language of fashion and advertising in order to subvert it.  His painterly hand references his desire for a return of humanity and spirit to a consumerist world.

The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is used by designers in the advertising and marketing industries, it allows the exact specification and accurate replication by printers worldwide of  any colour in the printed medium. As such a colour specified for printing is the same colour whether it be in Sydney, Seoul, Adelaide or Abu Dhabi. A PMS colour is therefore a visual absolute. 

As such it is an invaluable tool to consumerism allowing the mass production of products worlwide aiding and enabling the global spread of rampant consumerism.

The title of the work "Pantone Belief System" relates to the elevation of consumerism akin to a belief system within the Western world.
