The solo exhibition “Arena” at Eltham Library Community Gallery held in conjunction with Midsumma Festival and Nillumbick Shire Council will continue my exploration of the ingrained stereotypes still surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community perpetuated by mainstream news media and the impact this continuous scrutiny has on the LGBTQIA+ world.
The lives of the LGBTQIA+ community seem to be permanently up for discussion; from the recent Marriage Equality debates to the Israel Folau debacle; from LGBTQIA+ children and teaching staff being expelled from religious schools to relentless attacks on trans rights. From the banning of LGBTQIA+ books in Sydney libraries to the boycotting of Pride jerseys by members of the Manly Sea Eagles, discrimination against the community never seems far from public discussion and media attention.
The exhibition will comprise a new body of work exploring the effect of this continuous scrutiny and assault on the psyche of the LGBTQIA+ community and the intensely personal implications involved.
Through this new series of works, stereotypes will be questioned, scrutinised, dissected and reclaimed as sites of strength and pride.
This type of exhibition is imperative to bolster acceptance, inclusion and diversity and provide visibility and respect for all aspects of the community.
