solo exhibition

The exhibition at NERAM will continue my exploration of the ingrained stereotypes still surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community perpetuated by mainstream news media and the impact this continuous scrutiny has on the LGBTQIA+ world.

Rainbow colours are often used by companies and brands to create products and services to attract the LGBTQIA+ community.

Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell described this rainbow capitalism as damaging to LGBTQ+ communities. “Sometimes it feels like a box-ticking PR exercise to make the company look good and win over LGBTQ+ consumers. It is very off-putting and damaging. Many of us feel exploited.”

This virtue signalling and apparent support often disguises the fact that many companies do not have in place cultures of acceptance and tolerance and when push comes to shove discard their support over profit. Target and Bud Light both recently reneged on their support for the LGBTQIA+ community and often companies whilst outwardly supporting Gay rights also donate to Right wing opponents. Coca Cola and Adidas both routinely release rainbow themed merchandise whilst also being the major sponsors of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar where homosexuality is illegal.

Further to this governments utilise Rainbow washing or pink washing to justify their actions and beliefs. Rainbow washing is the strategy of promoting LGBTQIA+ rights protections as evidence of liberalism and democracy, especially to distract from or legitimize violence against other countries or communities.
